While many engage in “civic duty” to elect government representatives and trust in their commitments to represent us, the reality is that there’s only a tiny, very tiny, chance that anyone will represent us better than we will represent ourselves, so we need to keep a close eye on things at a minimum.
We need to educate ourselves first to discern and evaluate elected officials’ work and demand that our representatives perform their public service on par quality level with our expectations. I’m sure many may mean well and like the idea of serving their communities when they run for local offices, but what happens all too often after elections is that elected officials get swept away by internal and higher level politics influencing their work and somehow voters end up feeling that our representatives are following a largely pre-determined plan and go through the motions of hearing our questions, concerns and grievances more as a decorative formality.
In the past, consequences of this disconnect may not have felt earth-shattering, but we are now in the era of big global changes that have been trickling down to the local level without proper context and informed consent provided or discussed in a true public forum. Many of our elected officials may be largely unaware of the global context, so it’s essential that we all learn and amplify this information far and wide to ensure meaningful large-scale open discourse and adequate informed decisions to be made with the majority of towns’ and cities’ residents involved.
When I say “global context”, I’m referring to #Agenda21 (agenda for the 21st century). Once you understand what it is with all its benign sounding marketing slogans like “public safety”, “public-private partnerships”, “for the greater good”, “green new deal”, “net zero”, “sustainable development”, “social justice”, “equity”, “smart home” etc, you will understand the need to expose and reject this dystopian paradigm.
